Mailing Label Dimensions: Standard Shipping Label Sizes

Mailing label dimensions matter because most carriers expect a specific label size on their platform, and a label that is a few millimetres off will print clipped or scan poorly. The sizes are standardised, which makes the choice easier than it first appears.

The most common shipping label is the 4x6 inch (102x152 mm) format, with smaller address labels used for envelopes and larger formats for pallets and freight.

Common shipping sizes

The 4x6 inch label dominates e-commerce and parcel shipping. Larger 6x4 inch and 4x8 inch formats appear on some carriers, and pallet labels run to A5 or larger. Envelope address labels are smaller, often in layouts of several labels per sheet.

Rolls versus sheets

Thermal shipping labels usually come on rolls with a three-inch core for a label printer. Address labels on A4 sheets run through a standard office printer. The carrier and the printer you already have decide which format to buy.

Face stock and adhesive

Direct thermal labels are the default for shipping because they need no ribbon. Thermal transfer with a synthetic face is used where the label must survive water, abrasion or outdoor exposure. A permanent adhesive keeps the label on the parcel through handling.

FAQ

Is 4x6 the same as 100x150 mm?

4x6 inches is 102x152 mm, and the 100x150 mm label is a near equivalent used in metric markets. Confirm the exact size the carrier platform expects, since a 2 mm difference can affect the printed barcode area.

Do I need a special printer?

Roll labels need a thermal label printer; sheet labels run on a standard laser or inkjet printer. The label format, not the carrier, determines the printer.
