Mirror Coated Paper: Ultra-Glossy Cast Coated Label Paper

Mirror coated paper is cast coated label paper with a surface glossy enough to read as a mirror. The coating is dried against a polished cylinder, which produces a flat, glass-like face that shows fine print and saturated colour better than a standard gloss.

It is the stock used when a label is the main visual on the product: cosmetics, wine and spirits, and premium packaging where the label has to look expensive.

How cast coating differs

Standard gloss paper is calendered; cast coated paper is pressed against a polished drum while the coating dries, copying that smoothness onto the surface. The result is a flatter, more reflective face that gives sharper print than ordinary gloss stock.

Print and colour

Mirror coated paper takes high-resolution offset and flexo printing well, and the high gloss deepens colours and black. It is not writable, and it is usually finished with a varnish or lamination on the press to protect the surface.

Where it fits

Its place is where appearance leads: cosmetic and skincare labels, wine labels, gift packaging and high-end retail. For utilitarian labels that will be handled roughly, a synthetic film is usually a better choice than a gloss paper face.

FAQ

Is it the same as glossy paper?

It is a higher grade of gloss. Cast coated paper is smoother and more reflective than ordinary glossy label paper, which is why it reads as a mirror finish.

Can I write or stamp on it?

No. The coated surface is not writable and does not take handwriting or stamps well. Use a matte or vellum stock for any label that must be written on.
